Common Causes of Knee Pain
If you have knee pain, there is likely some underlying cause either due to an injury, inflammation, or disease. If you have a knee injury, you may have damaged the knee bone, articular cartilage, meniscus, or ligaments. These all make up the knee joint that is the easiest joint in the body to injure in a fall or due to a sudden movement.
Ways that you can injure or cause damage to the knee include fracturing your knee bone where it connects to the knee joint. You can also dislocate your knee bones including the patella, tibia, and femur. As for the meniscus and tendons in the knee, you can suffer from injuries called meniscal tears and tendon tears.
Types of Knee Ligament Tears
There are four ligaments that support your knee joint. The collateral ligaments are located on the side of the knee joint. You have two collateral ligaments—the medial collateral ligament and lateral collateral ligament. The knee has two cruciate ligaments, too. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) are located in the knee joint.
As the name suggests, these ligaments form an X, which helps to control motion in the knee. The purpose of the collateral ligaments is to control motion from the side, while also helping to support the knee with sudden movements. Common types of knee ligament injuries include ACL and PCL injuries. You can also injure the collateral ligaments. We commonly see these with Sports Injuries.
Knee Pain Symptoms
If you are suffering from knee pain symptoms, you most likely have some loss of mobility. If you are unable to walk or bend your knee without pain, limit your movements until you get treatment. Your knee may be swollen, red, and hot to the touch, which is a sign of inflammation. This inflammation is in the muscle tissue, and when it gets inflamed it presses against surrounding nerve endings. This is what causes knee pain along with any damage to the knee joint, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, or meniscus.
Chiropractic Treatment for Knee Pain
At Back to Mind, we understand how to treat knee injuries naturally. We use comprehensive chiropractic treatment for knee pain. We start with a chiropractic evaluation to determine the best level of care and a personalized treatment program. From here, our chiropractic doctor will most likely begin by performing a chiropractic adjustment.
This spinal manipulation will realign your musculoskeletal system. If your sudden knee pain is associated with nerve damage or inflammation, this will improve circulation and reduce swelling. As a result, you can start experiencing knee pain relief without knee surgery or drugs.
We also provide massage, which complements our chiropractic treatments. Massage helps reduce inflammation in the muscles. It is also beneficial if you are suffering from a nerve condition associated with knee pain.
Physiotherapy is also available to help get you back up and moving with safe mobility. If you are interested in water-based treatments, consider hydrotherapy. This treatment modality is good for taking the weight off of your knee while you proceed with physical therapy or corrective exercises.
