Bursae are small sacs containing synovial fluid that are located where your tendons and muscles slide across bones. Synovial fluid is essential for lubricating joints and allowing for frictionless ease of movement. People with arthritis or other degenerative joint disease have inflamed synovial fluid that is too thin and diseased to protect joints during movement.
Inflammation of bursae is called bursitis. Common sites of bursitis are your hip, elbows and shoulders. Bursitis can also affect the knees, heels and the big toe joint. Standard treatment of bursitis involves physicians prescribing anti-inflammatory medications or giving steroid injections directly into affected bursae. Since these treatments provide only temporary relief of bursitis pain, many people rely on chiropractic for bursitis for long-term pain relief without the need to take prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Symptoms of Bursitis
Inflamed joint bursae will cause:
- Ache and stiffness
- Swelling/puffiness around the joint (swelling may be excessive enough to cause joint deformity)
- Redness/bruising/localized warmth
- Shooting, sharp pains when you move the joint
- Low-grade fever
- Inability to move the affected joint upon arising in the morning
What Causes Bursitis?
Repetitive movement and overuse are the most common causes of bursitis. People performing the same motions over and over again using the same joint to perform the motions are at a high risk for developing bursitis. Other reasons for inflammation of the bursae include:
- Trauma/injury to the joint
- Autoimmune disorders (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
- Diabetes
- Infections
Anyone can suffer from bursitis but adults with the following risk factors are more susceptible to inflammation of the bursae:
- People over 40
- Having hobbies or occupations involving pressure on bursae and/or repetitive motion (carpet layers, painters, gardeners, athletes, playing musical instruments)
- Being overweight (putting stress on knees and hips may cause bursitis)
- Having a chronic condition associated with development of bursitis.
How to Treat Knee Bursitis
Bursitis may take several months to heal correctly without proper treatment. Neglecting to visit your chiropractor for treatment of bursitis could lead to accumulation of scar tissue, worsening pain, and stiffness. Prompt chiropractic for bursitis is essential for removing the risk of complications that could allow bursitis to severely reduce your quality of life.
Chiropractic adjustments to help restore normal biomechanics and relieve pressure on knee joints is the recommended chiropractic treatment for knee bursitis. In addition, your chiropractor will show you how to do rehabilitative exercises to enhance joint forces. Active Release Technique (ART) is also useful for reducing pressure on inflamed bursae.
Hip Bursitis Treatment
Your chiropractor will work with you to gently stretch joint restrictions, improve coordination and strength of hip muscles and enable the femur to move smoothly within the hip joint. In addition to performing spinal adjustments to optimize the functioning of your nervous system, chiropractors use massage therapy, ice/heat therapy, and rehabilitative exercise to relieve the inflammation and pain of hip bursitis.
Shoulder Bursitis Treatment
The goal of chiropractic for bursitis of the shoulder is to eliminate inflammation and restore the functioning of the shoulder joint. This will help greatly reduce the amount of shoulder pain you are experiencing. Modalities such as a chiropractor’s adjustments, massage therapy, rehabilitative exercises, and ART are effective for reducing inflammation and pain without medications or surgery.
Shoulder bursitis may be accompanied by inflammation of tendons (tendinitis) lying next to the bursae. A symptom of should bursitis and tendonitis is feeling “pinching” aches and pains if you move your elbow away from your body.
