Common Causes of Neck Pain
The reason why you suffer from neck pain can vary from a neck injury, strained neck muscles, or poor posture. You may also have neck pain after an auto accident/car crash or sports injury. In this case, you could be diagnosed with whiplash, which is a neck injury that needs to be treated as soon as possible.
The typical cause of neck pain is inflammation in the neck muscles and tissue. When this occurs, the neck muscles press against the spinal column and nerves. This leads to pain and numbness including a stiff neck condition.
Another condition that leads to neck pain is associated with the spine. If the vertebrae in the upper cervical spine are bulging or herniated, this also presses against the nerves and creates inflammation.
Fortunately, the American Chiropractic Association reports that there are many treatments available for neck pain. This includes spinal decompression therapy on the upper spine to relieve the swelling in the vertebrae and realign any bulging discs. We offer spinal decompression therapy here at Back to Mind Chiropractic in South Florida.
Chiropractic Treatments
The American Chiropractic Association published a study backed by the National Center for Contemporary and Alternative Medicine for the National Institutes of Health that tested different types of neck pain treatments. Patients received over the counter pain medication, spinal manipulative therapy, or exercise. According to the research on chiropractic for neck pain:
- Those patients who received spinal manipulative therapy from chiropractors reduced their pain by at least 75 percent.
- Within 12 weeks of chiropractic treatments, 57 percent reduced their neck pain by at least 75 percent.
- This pain-free effect lasted for more than one year for 53 percent of the patients treated by chiropractors.
The other patients who received over-the-counter pain medication saw less than stellar results:
- Only 33 percent reduced their neck pain by 75 percent after 12 weeks of treatment.
- After one year, only 38 percent of these patients had at least 75 percent less neck pain.
Exercise had better results than OTR drugs but not as much success as chiropractic treatments.
Risk Factors for Neck Pain
If you regularly struggle with a sore neck, it might be caused by another issue. For instance, office workers who use poor posture when sitting at a computer all day are apt to have neck pain. By making lifestyle changes you can help reduce risk factors that are in your control.
Some risk factors are out of your control including accidents, such as a car crash or personal injuries. You might have a slip and fall accident that leaves you with severe neck pain. You may experience neck pain after recovering from a serious illness that left you immobilized for a long time.
We can help you make appropriate lifestyle changes while implementing strengthening exercises, massage, and spinal decompression therapy into your treatment. Here at Back to Mind Chiropractic in Hollywood, FL we use chiropractic care as an effective injury rehab to help with neck injuries.
