How TMJ Affects Your Quality of Life
The temporomandibular joint is the small joint that connects your lower skull to your skull on both sides of your head. This amazing joint is capable of more range of motion than any other joint in the body, allowing the jaw to slide forward and backward, and side to side, while also opening and closing — all the complex motions necessary for talking and chewing.
But this joint is also delicate, and a variety of problems can cause it to malfunction. A hard blow to the face, for instance, can knock one or both joints out of their normal alignment. Age-related degeneration or a longstanding alignment issue may erode the cartilaginous discs in the joint, leading to arthritis. In many cases, a misaligned bite and/or bruxism (unconscious tooth grinding or jaw clenching) can contribute to TMJ. Typical TMJ symptoms include:
- Extreme pain and stiffness when moving your jaw
- Inability to open your mouth normally
- Clicking or popping sounds in the joint
- A jaw that gets “locked” into one position
- Facial pain, fatigue, or swelling
- Shoulder, ear, or neck pain
Effective, Surgery-Free Solutions at Back To Mind
While dental treatment may help some cases of TMJ, other cases may require a different approach. But that doesn’t mean you have to endure jaw surgery. Our chiropractor, Dr. Abramson, can evaluate your jaw joint function and position, along with your symptoms and medical/dental history, to devise a drug-free, surgery-free course of treatment.
Subluxation of the jaw may respond well to gentle chiropractic adjustments that bring the joint components back into alignment. Massage therapy, ultrasound, and other soft tissue therapies can relax chronically tense, strained jaw or neck muscles. We may recommend lifestyle changes to help manage stress, a common cause of bruxism. We can even work hand-in-hand with your dentist as part of your comprehensive TMJ treatment plan.
