Surgeries for Accident Injuries
When conservative care and injections are not enough, Back To Mind coordinates surgical evaluation with orthopedic and spine specialists and manages rehabilitation before and after the procedure.
Most people injured in a car accident never need surgery. Chiropractic care, decompression, rehabilitation, and, when appropriate, injections resolve the majority of neck, back, and joint injuries. For the small number of patients whose injury does not respond, or whose imaging shows damage that will not heal on its own, surgery can be the right step. This page explains when that happens, which procedures are most common after an accident, and how Back To Mind supports patients through the process.

When Surgery Becomes an Option
Surgery is considered only after the less invasive options have been given a fair chance, with a few exceptions where waiting would risk permanent damage. A surgical consultation is typically recommended when:
- Nerve pain, numbness, or weakness is not improving after several weeks of conservative care and, where appropriate, injections
- Muscle weakness is getting worse, such as a foot that drags or a hand that keeps dropping objects
- Imaging shows a large disc herniation, spinal instability, a fracture, or a torn ligament or tendon that is unlikely to heal without repair
- Pain is severe enough to prevent work, sleep, and daily activity despite a full non-surgical plan
- Neck or back pain that is steadily improving, even if slowly
- Disc bulges on an MRI that do not match the symptoms or the examination
- Muscle and soft-tissue injuries, which respond to hands-on care and rehabilitation
- Pain that has not yet been examined or treated conservatively
Common Surgeries After a Car Accident
These are the procedures most often performed for accident-related spine and joint injuries. Many are done through small incisions on an outpatient basis. The surgeon decides which approach fits the injury.
Microdiscectomy
Removal of the portion of a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root. The most common surgery for sciatica that has not responded to conservative care.
Laminectomy
Removal of a small section of bone to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, often for stenosis made worse by a crash.
Spinal fusion
Joining two vertebrae to stabilize a segment that is unstable or badly degenerated, including cervical fusion (ACDF) for neck injuries.
Arthroscopic repair
Minimally invasive repair of torn shoulder or knee structures, such as a rotator cuff, labrum, or meniscus injured during impact.
How Back To Mind Supports Surgical Patients
Chiropractors do not perform surgery. The role of the Back To Mind team is to make sure surgery is recommended only when it is truly needed, that the patient arrives prepared, and that recovery afterward is guided rather than left to chance.
Thorough evaluation first
A detailed history, orthopedic and neurological examination, digital X-rays, and MRI when indicated. The findings have to agree with each other before surgery is discussed.Conservative care and injections
Chiropractic treatment, spinal decompression, rehabilitation, and, when appropriate, interventional pain management are tried before any surgical referral, unless the injury requires urgent attention.Surgical consultation
When surgery is a reasonable option, the patient is referred to an orthopedic or spine surgeon who works with the Back To Mind team. The full record, imaging, and treatment history go with the referral so nothing has to be repeated.Preparation and documentation
Pre-surgical conditioning where appropriate, insurance verification, and complete documentation for the patient’s record and, when applicable, attorney. Letters of Protection are accepted.Rehabilitation after surgery
Once the surgeon clears the patient, post-surgical rehabilitation is available at all nine locations: gentle mobility work, progressive strengthening, and return-to-activity planning coordinated with the surgeon’s protocol.
